Degree to be obtained
Master of Environmental engineering, specialty Biotechnology
The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland) and the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg (Germany) invite to apply for a Master’s program Biotechnology. After successfully completing three semesters, students earn a “double MSc” and are awarded certificates from both universities.
The program takes three semesters to complete: first semester at The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, second semester at the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg and third semester (master thesis) is conducted either at one of the participating universities or externally at a suitable company or research institution.
This program focuses on problems related to the use of biotechnology in engineering and environmental protection, food production as well as in the bioeconomy, including recovery of bioproducts and energy from waste materials. The program provides microbiological knowledge on the basics of biotechnological processes in environmental engineering and presents the possibilities of biotechnology transfer from a laboratory scale to a technical scale. Students will have the opportunity to develop soft skills and creative thinking. They will learn about trends, perspectives and limitations, including ethical ones, of a biotechnology-based economy.
Graduates of the MBT specialization are prepared to work with modern biotechnologies related to engineering and environmental protection, bioenergy production and food. The most important assets of graduates of the Master’s program Biotechnology are wide theoretical and practical knowledge, knowledge of modern biotechnologies and research methods, including molecular ones and the ability to work individually and in an international team. MBT graduates can find employment in international corporations dealing with biotechnology in engineering and environmental protection, industry, food production, biogas and biorefineries, in state and local government administration bodies operating in the bioeconomy, in research institutes or continue their education in Ph.D. studies.
3 semesters (1.5 years), ECTS 90
Free of charge, registration fee 85 PLN (about 18 Euro).
The studies start in February of a particular academic year. Application is up to the beginning of February but apply much earlier if you need to obtain additional documents, e.g. a visa.

Admission takes place consecutively for graduates who have successfully completed a Bachelor’s/Engineer’s degree with 210 ECTS (or equivalent) or have completed a Master’s degree. Those degrees should be obtained in the field: Civil Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical and Process Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Protection, Agriculture, Chemical Technology, Food Technology and Human Nutrition, Zootechnics, Bioengineering of Food Production, Agricultural and Forestry Technology, Management of Renewable and Mineral Resources, Food Processing Engineering, Commodity Science or similar field.
The admission procedure requires the diploma with a transcript of records. Students with a diploma of completion of studies abroad, who have a first degree comprising less than 210 ECTS (or equivalent), will be asked to pass courses from a given course catalogue with a workload of up to 30 ECTS, before the Master’s degree can be awarded.
Our program in the field of Environmental Engineering has been rated 5th out of 27 such programs in Poland, indicating the quality of the research and education that takes place at our institution.
Feedback from our students
Studying at an international specialty Biotechnology (MBT) was the best possible decision. A lot of knowledge, getting rid of the language barrier, opening up to other cultures and making new friendships for life - these are just a few of the many benefits. In addition, a double diploma, thanks to which I enjoyed working in an international company almost immediately after graduation. A great adventure that cannot be compared to ordinary university life. I recommend it to all who still hesitate if it's worth it!
"The field of Environmental Engineering with a specialization in Biotechnology is the right choice for people who do not like boredom. During the studies you have a great opportunity to get to know the cultures of the world and after graduation you have a chance to stand out among other applicants while looking for a job. Thanks to this decision, I have new friends as well as a unique experience of living and studying abroad, not to mention significant improvement of my language skills. Teachers were helpful and had an enormous knowledge that they willingly share.
Studying in Germany is also another form of education that translates to the greater amount of free time during the semester that you can spend on visiting Western capitals, and when there is better time than now? ;) I highly recommend and encourage you to choose Biotechnology."
